Ethan Allen

Ethan Allen (1738-1789) was an American Revolutionary War hero and a prominent figure in the early history of Vermont. He is best known for his leadership in the capture of Fort Ticonderoga in 1775, a pivotal event that bolstered the colonial cause against British rule. In addition to his military exploits, Allen was a philosopher and writer, contributing to the discourse on religion and reason. His notable works include "Of the Capture of Ticonderoga: His Captivity and Treatment by the British," which recounts his experiences during the war, and "Reason, the Only Oracle of Man; Or, A Compendius System of Natural Religion," where he explores his views on natural religion and rational thought.
