Hendrik Hamel

Hendrik Hamel was a Dutch sailor and explorer, best known for his account of shipwreck and survival in Korea during the 17th century. His notable work, "Verhaal van het vergaan van het jacht de Sperwer / En van het wedervaren der schipbreukelingen op het eiland Quelpaert en het vasteland van Korea (1653-1666)", provides a rare glimpse into the culture and geography of Korea at the time, as well as the experiences of European castaways. Hamel's narrative is significant not only for its adventurous content but also for its insights into the interactions between Western and Eastern societies during a period of exploration and trade.
