About This Book
Three young scions flee arrest and take refuge with a relative at a mountain convent; one rides north to find a kinsman and there helps a besieged provincial family escape, after which the fugitives are received into a mountain stronghold of outlaws. The band shelters and counsels them while preparing for rescue and retaliation. At the capital, a powerful minister engineers reprisals, ordering arrests, confiscations and grave desecrations, and dispatching troops; a regional lord outwardly placates inspectors while secretly mustering forces, producing a tense convergence of court intrigue and impending military pursuit.
