Domestic scenes and conversations gradually reveal past events and emotional responsibilities, while the community’s prayers, caregiving, and moral expectations press upon her conscience. The volume examines convalescence, remorse, and the ways familial devotion and social scrutiny influence a young woman’s attempts to rebuild hope and reckon with her altered circumstances.
