A call

A seemingly composed man moves through drawing-rooms and parks, observing and being observed, while friendships and family ties are strained by secrecy, desire, and social ambition. Episodes alternate intimate psychological scenes with epistolary passages, shifting viewpoint to reveal how personal longing, envy, and duty complicate public conduct. The work examines the slipperiness of self-knowledge and how small gestures and casual talk expose deeper moral ambiguities among people who believe they know each other.
