A travel narrative explores the coastal and inland province of Galicia, describing its rugged mountains, fjord-like coastline, river valleys, vineyards, pine-clad summits, and terraced fields. The author records visits to towns and ports such as Vigo, Santiago de Compostela, Corunna and Tuy, and to fishing villages, markets, bathing places and pilgrimage sites, noting local costume, boats and customary practices. The account combines topographical sketches and historical anecdotes with practical travel observations and is illustrated with color and line plates, photographs, and a map to orient readers to the region's scenery, people, and architectural and maritime features.
This book does not pretend to be a history or a complete record of Galicia. Its purpose is to show something of the life and character of a little-known part of Spain, and to deal with things seen and done by the visitor who travels under competent and comfortable guidance. I have written either of what I experienced or on the authority of prominent residents with whom I came in contact in my wanderings.
