About This Book

A sequence of travel essays that trace walks and rides through Florida’s varied landscapes — flatwoods, marshes, beaches, rivers, and small towns — with close attention to local plants, weather, and human scenes. Vivid natural-history observation, especially of coastal and inland birds, records behaviors, migrations, and interactions among pelicans, gannets, herons, ospreys, and shorebirds. Interwoven with these ornithological notes are anecdotal sketches of plantations, roads, mills, and shrines, and reflective descriptions of daily life in places visited. The tone is observational and contemplative, blending field notes, travel memoir, and quiet meditations on place and season.
