About This Book

The book traces the institutional history of a northern grammar school from its late-medieval chantry origins through re-foundation, statutory reform, and expansion into the twentieth century. It reconstructs governance, endowments, seals and statutes, curricular practices from the trivium to classical instruction, and relationships with the church and Cambridge colleges. Individual headmasters, benefactors, exhibitions, financial management of estates, building and staffing changes are examined alongside social customs and gaps in the archival record. The final chapters describe nineteenth-century crises and reforms that modernized the school while preserving long-standing continuity, supported by archival documents, local recollections, and illustrative photographs.
