Numbers within braces are page references to the original manuscript. Words may have multiple spelling variations or inconsistent hyphenation in the text. These were left unchanged. Seven misspelled words were corrected.
Footnotes were renumbered sequentially and were moved to the end of the chapter. Footnotes to footnotes were alphabetized sequentially. Obvious printing errors, such as backwards, upside down, or partially printed letters, were corrected. Missing punctuation and diacriticals were added.
The following items were changed:
- Math in Footnote [243] was corrected.
- Capitalized one instance each of Fort Smith and Fort Massac.
- Changed one instance Port Smith to Fort Smith.
