La narración se sitúa junto a un colegio jesuita de facha austera que marca tensiones en la aldea vecina. Un hombre huraño, Gonzalfáñez, vuelve a habitar una casita campestre junto a su amigo de infancia Dorín; sus paseos en silencio y la atención de Gonzalfáñez a la naturaleza contrastan con la rigidez institucional del colegio. La construcción del edificio entrelaza a los personajes con la casa religiosa, alimenta habladurías, encuentros íntimos con mujeres trabajadoras —especialmente Teresa— y desemboca en una muerte violenta que siembra sospecha y desasosiego. La obra explora la fe, la sospecha social y el choque entre soledad rural y poder clerical mediante la observación psicológica y el detalle regional.
