About This Book

The narrator recalls his childhood and a long seafaring career during successive reigns, presenting chronological, anecdotal chapters. He describes shipboard routine, training mishaps, medical and disciplinary incidents, and the camaraderie of crews. Deployments aboard named vessels are traced alongside engagements, patrols, and voyages to West Africa, China, the Malay Archipelago and other colonial stations. Interwoven reflections consider shore leave, encounters with local peoples and landscapes, and changes in naval duties and hazards over time.
