About This Book

A spirited series of episodes follows a fourteen-year-old scout and his companions as they explore salt marshes and vast woodland, learn scouting skills, and encounter the signs of life in remote shanties. The narrative alternates outdoor adventure and practical lessons—tracking and reading signs, knots and firecraft, camping on dunes, river duels, and organizing a Christmas brigade—while emphasizing resourcefulness, teamwork, and respect for nature. Scenes range from troop rivalry and humorous banter to tense rescues and solitary observation, framed by the rituals, songs, and steady growth in confidence and camaraderie among the boys.

“At duty’s call, with a smile for all,
The Scout will do his part!”

Dave Baldwin paused for a minute to listen; then, as he swung his axe in a tremendous, final blow against the tottering oak, he too broke triumphantly into the refrain:—

“And we’ll shout, shout, shout,
For the Scout, Scout, Scout,
For the Scouts of the U.S.A!”
