About This Book

The author provides a detailed contemporary survey combining historical overview with firsthand travel observation of the country’s geography, regions, and population. Chapters describe urban centres and rural districts, tribal structures, social and religious customs, and administrative practices, while assessing frontier and boundary concerns and relations with neighbouring powers. Attention is given to economic resources, trade routes, and natural history, supported by illustrations, maps, and synthesized official material. The result is an informative, largely descriptive account intended to convey both practical travel knowledge and a picture of prevailing political and social conditions.

Transcriber’s Note:

Footnotes were renumbered sequentially and were moved to the end of the chapter. Footnotes [27], [56] and [57] have multiple anchors. A few anchors are positioned at the beginning of the sentence.

Words may have multiple spelling variations or inconsistent hyphenation in the text. Obsolete and alternative spellings were left unchanged. Misspelled words were corrected. Where spelling varies between an index entry and the text of the book, the index entry was adjusted to match the text. Obvious printing errors, such as backwards, upside down, or missing letters and punctuation, were corrected. Use of italics was made consistent in various lists. Final stops missing at the end of sentences and abbreviations were added.

Columns and rows were reversed for two tables on page 293. When a table does not display completely on small handheld devices, tapping the screen may present the entire table in miniature.

The pedigree chart in Chapter XIV was converted to a descendant format to fit electronic screens. Spouses are indented between the male's name and their children. An image of the original chart was added.

There may be a digit not printed in Appendix X, last column for entry of Mercery, &c.

Mimosa, _Acacia_ was changed to Mimosa, Albizia.
