About This Book

The novel follows Clyde Griffiths, an ambitious young man whose pursuit of social ascent pulls him between Roberta, a vulnerable working-class woman who becomes dependent on him, and Sondra, an alluring upper-class woman whose opportunities promise the life he desires. Torn by desire, fear, and self-interest, he vacillates over responsibility and escape until a desperate act results in the working-class woman's death. The subsequent investigation, courtroom drama, and punishment expose tensions of class, ambition, sexual politics, and the influence of circumstance on moral choice, portraying a deterministic critique of individual accountability within a stratified society.
