About This Book
The narrative follows a rural man who rises from hard labor to modest prosperity—acquiring land, a shop, and a vineyard—but domestic misery and his wife's chronic neglect unravel family life. To protect his children he places them elsewhere, becomes bitter, pursues lovers, and largely abandons home duties. Neighbors' resentment culminates in arson that destroys his house; his wife's later death and his retreat into solitude complete his moral and emotional ruin. Scenes of village ritual and family exchange frame themes of fate, social judgment, frustrated ambition, and the human cost of pride and isolation.
