About This Book
The volume offers a plate-by-plate catalogue of ancient wall paintings recovered around Herculaneum, describing scenes of semi-nude mythic figures, dancers and Bacchic followers, banquet genii and ritual objects. Each entry gives close visual analysis of color, drapery, pose and dimensions, proposes identifications or alternate readings (such as divine subjects versus domestic nuptial scenes) and comments on likely ritual or decorative functions. Short interpretive notes relate costume and attributes to broader artistic conventions and situate individual paintings by archaeological provenance.
