About This Book
A grief-stricken child nicknamed Bird becomes orphaned and the reading of a reclusive relative’s will draws neighbors and kin into gossip and speculation. The will’s unexpected provisions provoke rivalries, schemes, and amateur detective work as several people contest the child’s future. Episodes alternate between rural domestic life and a summer in the city, featuring family tensions, comic maneuvering, small acts of kindness, and perilous moments such as an escape down a fire-escape. Gradually alliances form and obstacles are overcome, leading to the child’s release from the constraints that threatened her security and to a hopeful rearrangement of her prospects.
