About This Book
A young Army pilot takes leave in the Oregon woods and becomes involved with the forestry service, learning wood lore, lookout duties, and aerial fire patrol techniques. The narrative follows his shift from fishing and outdoor life into active firefighting: drafted to fight a blaze, he joins ground crews, patrols from the air, faces storms and narrow escapes, and helps hunt an arsonist. Interlaced episodes show training with artillery, emergency midair peril, mountain lookout experiences, and river fishing, concluding with the containment of fires and the close of the season.
