A restless young billy-goat leaves a quiet farm and heads west seeking a place as a leader among distant flocks. The episodic narrative follows his travel misadventures—collisions, clashes with wolves, encounters with cowboys and Indians, firefighting and rescue incidents, comic episodes including a bull-fight and a volcanic explosion, and other unexpected trips. Varied animal and human episodes test his courage and resourcefulness, and he gradually learns leadership, adaptation, and the practical challenges of life beyond the farm.
