The tale follows a military officer who, after encounters with a striking courtesan, is drawn into the orbit of a mysterious red‑bearded stranger and other uncanny figures. They subject him to tests, disclose prophetic knowledge, and arrange a meeting with a celestial woman; the stranger then bestows vast treasures and predicts the officer’s future service to the ruling house and the coming of peace. Supernatural patronage, ritualized exchanges, and sudden social elevation intertwine as the officer employs the gifts to support his sovereign, and subsequent events confirm the stranger’s forecasts, raising themes of fate, authority, and human agency.
