A first-person narrator recalls youthful attractions that begin as tactile preferences for certain women and then deepen into an intense, spiritual affection for a dark-eyed young woman named Vangelio. He recounts how her voice, touch, and presence soothe and heal him, how family and neighbors respond with teasing, and how jealousy arises when another suitor, Giannis, courts her. Moments of tenderness, rivalry during a wedding dance, and the narrator's alternating bliss, humiliation, and longing trace an emotional coming-of-age in which sensual impulses transform into a more reflective, painful form of devotion.
