About This Book
An aging king prepares his son for marriage and succession, but the kingdom slowly falls into neglect while forests remain lush. A young prince, wearing worn finery, wanders and sleeps beneath ancient trees that murmur among themselves as they recall earlier human visits. He returns to a partly ruined palace where only the tall tower is still inhabited and household tensions surface; a teenage girl welcomes him. Elsewhere the prince discreetly musters villagers, equips them with tools and weapons, and leads a cautious night crossing toward an enemy camp, setting in motion a sequence of domestic and communal struggles.
