About This Book

The book offers a guided architectural and historical tour of the university town, beginning with comparisons to its sister city and an account of early Roman and medieval origins. It surveys the major and lesser colleges, describing notable gates, courts, chapels, and the riverside backs, and outlines the university library, Senate House, press, and museums. Attention is given to parish and collegiate churches and to the town's streets and setting, while plans and photographs support descriptions of architectural detail, the prevailing atmosphere of repose, and the impact of later urban changes.
