About This Book

A collection of illustrated travel sketches and descriptive chapters surveying eastern Canada’s landscapes, towns, rivers, lakes, and frontier settlements. It portrays urban features and daily life in places like Montreal and Quebec, examines navigation on the St. Lawrence and Ottawa rivers, and describes waterfalls, mountain passes, timber and agricultural operations, and settler habitations. Interspersed are practical observations on emigration and sporting, social notes on colonial and indigenous presence, and vivid topographical detail intended to guide and inform readers about the region’s scenery, infrastructure, and local customs.
