Christmas: A Story

A small town confronts economic hardship and a public petition to forego customary Christmas observances, a placard and scrawled signatures making the debate visible to every neighbor. At the center is Mary Chavah, who returns home to find her lawn mysteriously sprouting violets, arranges an austere household by moving the cooking stove into the parlor, and devotes herself to sewing rather than decorative comforts. Her friend Jenny Wing and other townspeople observe and comment on these private choices, while episodes quietly trace local routines, gossip, and how ordinary people preserve meaning and generosity amid restraint.
