A military biography traces the life and career of a Scottish-born officer who rose from modest origins to field‑marshal rank and a peerage, following his early education and adoption of a new surname. It recounts his service across the Peninsular campaigns, colonial and home postings, and expeditions in China and India, and describes his role in the Crimean War and, in India, his organization and leadership during the Mutiny, including the relief and storming of Lucknow and subsequent campaigns in Rohilcund, Central India, and Oude. The narrative closes with his later honors and final recognition at Westminster Abbey.
