A proud top competitor suffers a single error that abruptly reverses his fortunes, turning him into a fugitive and undermining his social standing. The plot follows his frantic flight through a crowded, futuristic city of aircars and express lanes while authorities pursue him. Interwoven domestic scenes reveal a strained marriage and social obligations, including a large farewell gift for friends leaving as colonists. The narrative sketches a society driven by speed, rivalry, and public image, exploring how technology and rules amplify pressure and how pride and a momentary lapse can expose the fragility of status and relationships.
