CORDUROY
RUTH COMFORT MITCHELL
A young ranch owner, newly bereaved after her brother's death in the war, rejects comfort, takes full charge of the estate, and cloaks herself in solitude and black as she processes grief. A fierce storm strands a group of travelers at her remote adobe, forcing her into reluctant hospitality and small acts of care that break her isolation. On Christmas morning a solemn stranger brings a stained letter and news from her dead brother, unsettling her defenses and setting in motion a gradual shift in feeling, responsibility, and connection to her community.
