About This Book

The play follows a celebrated military leader whose arrogance and disdain for the common people provoke political conflict and result in his exile. Rejected, he allies with former enemies and prepares to attack the city he once defended, but intimate pleas from his mother and wife compel him to suspend vengeance. The drama examines the clash between private loyalty and public duty, the power of rhetoric and popular resentment, and the destructive effects of pride, ending in betrayal and a tragic personal downfall.
