The narrative follows his prodigious youth, his claim to arms, and training in a shadowy land where he acquires deadly skills. It recounts his feats defending Ulster: single combats, monstrous opponents, and the great campaign sparked by Queen Meave's demand for a prized bull. Personal tragedies appear amid the battles, most notably his tragic duel with Ferdia and other bitter family and love conflicts.
