In de loop van zijn dienst leert hij lezen, schrijven en navigatievaardigheden, neemt deel aan handelsexpedities langs verschillende kusten en koloniale havens, en zoekt voortdurend naar manieren om te overleven en vooruit te komen te midden van gevaar, kansen en morele verleidingen.
