A collection of seafaring narratives and sketches depicting life aboard whalers and other vessels, with accounts of whale hunts, boat chases, storms, collisions, rescues, and everyday shipboard routines. The pieces mix vivid action and suspense with quieter episodes of camaraderie, practical experiments, and holiday observances, while offering natural-history observations of marine life and nautical craft. Moments of tragedy and comic relief reveal character under strain, and the varied vignettes remain rooted in detailed maritime experience and reflection.
Warned by previous experience, I do not propose to make any apology for the publication of these stories in book form, but I hope my generous critics will at least pardon me for expressing my gratitude for the way in which they have received all my previous efforts. Naturally, I sincerely hope they will be equally kind in the present instance.
