About This Book
The narrative follows Robert, a veteran who cannot reconcile wartime experiences with his former scholarly ambitions and sells his beloved library to take a dull bank job. Daily office routine and social complacency collide with intrusive combat memories, culminating in a traumatic episode in which he kills a mortally wounded comrade to end suffering. The novella traces his growing alienation, dissociation, and longing for meaning or intimacy, contrasting bureaucratic sameness with violent recollection while examining guilt, identity erosion, and the difficulty of returning to civilian life.
