The study traces how biblical, apocryphal, and pre-Christian mythic elements shaped visual representations of the devil and hell, then surveys their iconographic development from early Christian art through the era of Dante and Giotto. It compares literary and theological sources with sculptural, mosaic, fresco, manuscript, and ivory depictions, identifies recurring types and compositional contexts such as Last Judgment scenes, and organizes examples chronologically and, when useful, geographically. The analysis aims to establish typologies and stylistic shifts and to serve as a foundational reference for further iconographic research.
