About This Book
The narrator travels into remote hills to inspect a copper prospect and meets Ike Harper, a weathered prospector who mistakes him for his eccentric partner. Harper sketches Magpie Simpkins as an absent-minded tinkerer who alternately takes up hypnotism, Christian Science, psychology and spiritualism, and at times salts mines to fool buyers. While Magpie sits in a trance attempting to commune with spirits, Harper recounts past schemes, domestic shortages, and the partners’ drifting life, blending mining detail and tall-tale humor to portray their comic, affectionate companionship and frontier hardships.
