About This Book

A collection of illustrated sketches and investigations of provincial personalities, curious incidents, and folklore from Devonshire. The author assembles biographical sketches, criminal and legal episodes, reports of hauntings, witchcraft, impostures and local oddities, supported by archival sources, eyewitness accounts and portraits. Entries range from comic characters and eccentric villagers to pirates, inventors and religious visionaries, interspersed with anecdotes, illustrations and an index, presenting a varied portrait of regional life and popular belief.
