The narrative follows marches between encampments, methods of transport including rail transfer, episodes of local unrest and combat, and practical problem‑solving during construction. Interwoven are descriptive observations of the lake, coasts, inland settlements, and regional plant and animal life, with attention to the labour, engineering and navigational challenges encountered throughout the campaign.
