The narrative follows employees and families in an old Moscow merchant milieu, centering on two associates whose interactions expose tensions of conscience and social habit. Through interwoven episodes and apocryphal sketches drawn from folk legend and liturgical imagery, it examines fate, inherited guilt, and the idea that betrayal or violence can paradoxically open or define the soul. Symbolist prose layers religious ritual, saints’ legends, and uncanny scenes to blur myth and everyday commerce, while alternating concentrated character scenes with dreamlike, folkloric vignettes that probe moral inevitability and spiritual scrutiny.
