About This Book

Through linked vignettes set on a rural farm, an affectionate household and its circle of dogs and other creatures provide scenes of daily life, mischief, and small dramas—puppy antics, rivalries, hunts, seasonal comings and goings, and gentle domestic ceremonies. Each chapter centers on particular animals and episodes—courtship and marriage, playful competitions, rescues, and neighborhood encounters—mixing humor, keen observation of animal behavior, and tender human-animal bonds. Illustrative portraits and episodic structure emphasize manners, loyalty, and the comforts and complications of communal country life.
