About This Book
A rural moral narrative follows a young woman raised by her uncle who is expected to marry his son; when the son refuses and weds another, hardship and illness follow, culminating in his death. The woman quietly aids the bereaved wife and secretly supports their family, later presenting the orphaned child to the uncle in hopes of softening him. The uncle initially rejects her but is soon overwhelmed by remorse and reconciles the household; thereafter the heroine remains unmarried and continues to care for the child.
