About This Book

A party of well-dressed visitors arrives at a cattle round-up camp and watches the hard-bitten ranch hands at work. The polite tourists admire the scene while the cowboys' rough manners and routines make the cultural divide evident. A veteran rider tries to demonstrate horsemanship on a fractious roan to impress the visitors, prompting the owner to judge the animal mistreated and to dismiss the rider. The rider, wounded in pride, prepares to quit while the foreman defends him and a dispute over animal handling and reputation exposes tensions of dignity and mutual misunderstanding.
