About This Book

The volume gathers folkloristic studies, verse translations and philological essays drawn from field notes and scholarly sources. It presents analyses of Finnish folk medicine and magical healing practices, collections and interpretations of runic songs, ballads and tales, and discussions of proverbs, riddles and poetic form. Editorial commentary addresses editions of the Kalevala and notes on individual runes, while linguistic essays examine relations among Finnish, Estonian and Sami and other comparative topics. Material is arranged with folk-material and translations first, followed by linguistic investigations and assorted shorter articles, often combining field observation with literary and historical sources.
