About This Book

A large body of letters and accompanying notes preserves an intellectual hostess's exchanges over several decades, documenting salon meetings, correspondence with literary and political figures, and daily affairs. The material records responses to theatrical, publishing, and parliamentary events, observations from travel between country houses and cities, and matters of health, patronage, and legal or financial concern. Together the letters illuminate conversational culture, networks of influence, and the everyday management of an eighteenth-century literary circle.
