About This Book

A concise, annotated survey of English illustration from the 1855–70 period assembles representative wood-engravings and magazine plates, pairing bibliographical notes with critical commentary on individual artists and their output. The compiler discusses selection choices and omissions, the collector’s perspective, and the technical loss or alteration caused by contemporary engraving processes compared with later reproductions. Short artist appreciations alternate with practical cataloguing details and an index, all aimed at guiding readers through the decade’s characteristic styles, production issues, and the challenges of preserving and evaluating illustrated work from that era.

Printed by T. and A. Constable, Printers to His Majesty, at the Edinburgh University Press
