About This Book

A series of essays combines practical instruction and personal reflection on literary craft, addressing technical elements of style, choice of words, realism, and the ethics of the writer's profession. The writer examines how detail and restraint shape narrative effect, recommends habits of a discerning reader, recalls books that influenced his development, and traces the origins and prefatory concerns of several of his own works.
