About This Book
A ship's officer, struck by the beauty of a young woman he spies at her window, impulsively intrudes into her home and claims to be a long-absent brother. The household misinterprets his behaviour as madness or tragic news, the daughter responds with scorn and the mother contemplates calling the police. The episode unfolds as a comic sequence of mistaken identity, bravado and social awkwardness, observing domestic manners and the gulf between romantic fantasy and the consequences of impulsive actions.
