Everest
About This Book
A Planetary Survey team arranges an aerial drop of a climber onto the world's highest peak to follow reports of manlike creatures. The parachuted man endures a prolonged blizzard and is later rescued after responding to a smoke signal; he reveals that unseen intelligences had assisted him with compressed air, heating and a power pack. He explains they are extraterrestrial beings adapted to extreme altitude, communicate telepathically, and occupy the summit as a remote vantage to monitor humanity's advance in atomic power and rocketry, resisting any interference. The story examines exploration, human hubris, and contact with unfamiliar intelligence.
