Eyes That Watch

The narrative follows Sam Conway after his return from a perilous Mars expedition, where he survived hostile conditions and discovered an ancient device promising vast, dangerous power. Back on Earth he struggles to readjust, tempted by the object's possibilities and by a wish to preserve loved ones, while sustaining a relationship with Ellen Varney. Martian solitude and the technical knowledge he brings harden him and fuel paranoia that others might learn his secret. When he finds signs his workshop may have been entered, he must guard the artifact and confront moral and practical consequences. The story combines planetary exploration, psychological aftereffects, and the risks of unmatched power.
