About This Book

A chaplain's diary-style account chronicles a single infantry regiment's mobilization, training, front-line service, and occupation period during the war. The narrative mixes immediate battlefield reports with personal anecdotes that convey everyday routines, religious observance, comradeship, humor, courage, and grief amid attacks and defenses across multiple sectors. Reflective passages highlight regimental esprit de corps and the chaplain's interaction with officers and enlisted men. The book also includes a historical appendix by a fellow soldier along with maps, unit records, citations, decorations, and appendices that document personnel and actions.

FOOTNOTES:

[6] After the Champagne fight, by request of the French military authorities, a number of officers and men were recommended for decoration, including Major Anderson for the Legion of Honor. The lists were lost while going through the French Army channels, but it is still hoped that the honors will be granted.
