About This Book

The narrative follows an orphaned scion whose inheritance is seized by an avaricious uncle; a faithful servant secretly saves the child and places him with a shepherd and later the wise Melthal, who educates and trains him for arms. Raised under an assumed name, he gains distinction in the army but falls in love with a peasant maiden who also bears a secret identity, creating divided loyalties. Melthal eventually reveals the youth's true birth and pressures the usurping Count to restore his rights, while intrigues, false reports of death, and forbidden attachments drive the plot toward tragic confrontations and moral reckonings.
